“Let’s make our city better together”
An initiative by Global Shapers Jaipur
Increased CO2 in the environment is one of the main causes of global warming and the problem of climate change. According to the latest IPCC reports, India will be one of the worst affected countries by climate change. Jaipur being an industrial city already suffers from high pollution levels. Our solution to this problem revolves around absorbing the extra carbon in the atmosphere through afforestation and plantations. With the help of students and other micro-level actors such as local businesses, political and non-governmental organisations, Global Shapers Jaipur will attempt to build pockets of green patches throughout Jaipur. This has the potential to act as the lungs of the local neighbourhoods.
Objectives
Project Plan
Stage I: We are partnering with public schools and exclusively conducting plantations in their compounds or vicinities. Partnering with public schools has a twofold purpose. First, it ensures that the tree saplings that are planted are looked after. Second, it will directly bring the students in the solution process of the climate change problem.
Stage II: We are planning to undertake small afforestation projects using the Miyawaki technique on the previously barren land with the help of local businesses.
Potential impact of the project
The project is a humble attempt at reducing the carbon emissions of the city and contributing towards reducing the much larger problem of climate change. Secondly, Plantations will also aid in stabilising the groundwater levels in their neighbourhoods. Jaipur is a dry and arid city and reduced groundwater levels is a major concern. A third but indirect impact of the plantations will be that they will aid in reducing the pollution levels of the city.

*The Global Shapers Community is a network of young people driving dialogue, action and change. We believe in a world where young people are central to solution building, policy-making and lasting change. Born out of the World Economic Forum, the Global Shapers Community is a network of inspiring young people under the age of 30 working together to address local, regional, and global challenges. With more than 10000 members, the Global Shapers Community spans 400 city- based hubs in 155 countries.
**Miyawaki Technique
Miyawaki method also called the Potted Seedling Method of afforestation is a method of afforestation wherein the native trees of the area are planted in close proximity to create a forest. According to some sources the growth rate of the forest developed through the Miyawaki technique is supposed to be approximately 10 times higher than a normal forest and can absorb 30 times more carbon dioxide than a regular forest.
To fully understand the Miyawaki technique you can check out the TED Talk by Shubhendu Sharma. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BgPFIKCaOQ
