Become a Global Shaper

Global Shapers is a volunteer initiative launched by the World Economic Forum (WEF) to connect diverse, passionate young people in cities around the world. Each city’s hub self-organizes to address local, regional and global challenges – from disaster response and environmental sustainability, to fighting climate change, building inclusive communities, and more. The community consists of local hubs that are located in over 400 cities with more than 10,000 Shapers in total. The community’s mission is enabling youth to be a voice in the future of local, regional, and global thought processes and to propel youth to be catalysts of entrepreneurship in the global public interest.

As a community we have unique access and support from WEF but we are ultimately self-organised and our success as a hub depends on our members’ drive and demonstrated commitment for positive social and environmental impact.

Why apply?

The Jaipur hub is proud of the diversity, quality and intimacy of our membership. Whatever your passions and ambitions, there will be members of the hub who share and complement your interests.

As Shapers, we have the unique opportunity to launch and participate in projects with support from the community and WEF. The Forum hopes to catalyze and support fresh ideas and solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges through in-person meetings and virtual interactions using the online Shapers platform. We also aim to inspire Shapers and other communities through cross-mentoring. We are thrilled to provide this unique group with the opportunity to make a local impact in the greater global context and look forward to seeing the Global Shapers Community continue to evolve and grow.

Membership of the hub provides access to engage with the broader World Economic Forum community, including the opportunity to apply to attend the WEF Annual Meeting in Davos and other major events.

As a member of the Global Shapers Community, each Shaper will have the opprtunity to:

  • belong to a global network of exceptional young leaders who work closely to create a better future, as well as engaging with the wider community of the World Economic Forum, its members and other partners – through physical and virtual arenas,
  • further develop their leadership skills and capabilities through custom projects, programs, workshops, social gatherings, mentoring opportunities, etc. curated by the local hub;
  • gain exposure to thought leadership and knowledge of global, regional and industrial challenges,
  • actively initiate and contribute to local, regional and global initiatives and projects to help create a better future – and the world, and
  • engage in opportunities that strengthen entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial spirit as a means of creating economic and social development.

What we're looking for

Basic eligibility criteria:

  1. You are >= 18 years old and < 27 years old at the time of nomination;
  2. You must live or work in Jaipur or have sufficiently strong ties to Jaipur to be able to fully participate in the hub’s activities;
  3. Have a  positive social impact bent of mind;
  4. Ready to engage and contribute to both the local and global community of Global Shapers, and help develop both the hub, the hub projects and members
  5. Can actively participate in meetings and contribute to hub development and projects in Jaipur

Beyond this, we assess applications on four criteria:

  • Impact motivation: A core aspect of Shapers’ mission is to be a community that has a positive social and environmental impact in our communities and the world. We assume this can be manifested in many different ways, but we want candidates to be able to express their interests and how they make a difference (whether in their jobs or otherwise).
  • Commitment & Community Mindset: Active membership is Jaipur hub’s lifeblood. We require at least 1-2 hours a week for the hub, additional commitment to participate in local and regional activities and active leadership and/or involvement in hub projects. Please be aware of your willingness to commit and contribute to the hub—if you don’t have enough time or bandwidth, please be honest. We struggle with more awesome applicants each year than available spaces, and it’s crucial that every hub member contributes to our group.
  • Achievement: This varies by age and sector. We’re looking for candidates who have established a track record of leadership and demonstrated impact in their field, or who are firmly on a leadership trajectory.
  • Leadership Potential: Again, we calibrate potential depending on age and sector. We’re seeking people who can demonstrate potential to be leaders in their fields.

About us

The Global Shapers Community is a network of young people driving dialogue, action, and change. The community consists of local hubs that are located in over 400 cities with more than 10,000 Shapers in total. No. Global Shapers Hubs are fairly decentralized and do not receive funding from the WEF, with the exception of some project-specific application-based grants. A Shaper does not get paid by the Jaipur hub or the WEF in any form.

Updated: April 20, 2021.

There is no application fee, only upon being accepted as a Shaper you are are expected to pay a nominal annual membership due of INR 1000.

Global Shapers initiate activities to make an impact in multiple areas – ranging from diverse interests such as civic participation to gender equality, to sustainability and climate change. Our Hub’s activities fit into the three following major areas:

  1. Climate and Environment
  2. Education and Employment
  3. Equity and Inclusion

Even though we advocate for activities within these areas, our Hub is not limited to it. For specific project examples, you can visit www.globalshapersjaipur.com and www.globalshapers.org or contact us at office[at]globalshapersjaipur.com.

All the Global Shaper Hubs are financially independent from the World Economic Forum. Each Hub makes an effort to fundraise and to find sponsors to fund the activities, events, and campaigns described in the previous question.

The Shapers in the Jaipur Hub meet at least once a month for 2-3 hours in a structured, mandatory attendance meeting. There are also different meetings depending on what projects/activities individual Shapers are a part of. Other than these meetings, there are social gatherings from time-to-time, which are not mandatory, but take place at random intervals depending on the general inclination of the group to hang out and socialise. In the past, we’ve gathered for events, hiking, and now virtual happy hours!

Eligibility

The hub is open to anyone between the age of 18 and 27 at the time of application — this year covers people who were born between 1 June 1993 to 1 June 2002. Shapers are diverse leaders, builders and changemakers from all walks of life. Shapers are highly committed to developing their leadership potential towards serving society, so anybody fitting this description who is within the age requirement is welcome. Every year we aim to diversify our hub more and bring in different backgrounds, skills, and perspectives.

Being a Shaper is an ongoing commitment. A Shaper remains in the community until the age of 30 or for a maximum of 5 years, whichever happens first. After the age of 30 or after 5 years of being a Shaper, you become an alumni which allows you to still have access to WEF resources, the community and other Global Shaper events. If a Shaper moves out of their hub city, they can either transfer to the hub in their next destination (if there is one) or leave the community.

A Shaper is expected to attend monthly meetings, actively participate in the community and contribute to the Hub activities throughout the year. Each Shaper spends their time co-creating (contribute and/or lead) at least one specific project and/or lead an operational aspect of the organization, which includes marketing, team development, impact measurement and more.
